Microsoft Drawbridge Research Project

Drawbridge is an application-virtualization project developed by Microsoft researchers which can "show up inside a future Windows version -- or maybe even as underlying technology enabling Microsoft to better run existing Windows apps (virtually) on mobile devices" (as described by Mary Jo Folley : http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/microsoft-goes-public-with-its-drawbridge-operating-system-research-project/11009 )

Drawbridge combines two core technologies:
First, a picoprocess, which is a process-based isolation container with a minimal kernel API surface.
Second, a library OS, which is a version of Windows enlightened to run efficiently within a picoprocess. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/drawbridge/

Windows Blue

According to rumors, Windows Blue is an upgrade for Windows 8 and Windows RT.  It will see improvements to the NT kernel and support for smaller and larger screens.

Windows Blue is the successor to Windows 8. It is not Windows 9; it is an updated version of Windows 8.

Windows Blue will be a free upgrade for Windows 8 and Windows RT users.

Windows Blue is expected to launch in August of this year.

There is going to be Windows Client ,Windows Phone and Windows Server Blue Release ( it will be on the same ship pace as Windows client Blue: annually, instead of once every three years).

Microsoft is working with Intel to make sure ultrabooks and hybrids that will run on Intel's next generation processor will have longer battery life with Windows Blue.
The final result should allow ultrabooks  to have the performance of a PC with the power efficiency of a tablet or smartphone.

Update: Microsoft has publically acknowledged 'Blue'

Microsoft ends support for Windows XP

Microsoft ends support for Windows XP on 8th April 2014.
Here's the WHY, WHAT & HOW of migration

"Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014. If your organization has not started the migration to a modern desktop, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support.

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates.
Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks.

Enterprise Customers: Microsoft offers large organizations in-depth technical resources, tools, and expert guidance to ease the deployment and management of Windows, Office and Internet Explorer products and technologies. To learn more about migration and deployment programs, please contact your Microsoft sales representative or Certified Microsoft Partner. Learn how to pilot and deploy a modern desktop yourself, download the free Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and begin your deployment today.
Small to Medium Business: There are many options for small and medium businesses considering moving to a modern PC with the latest productivity and collaboration tools. Small to mid-size organizations should locate a Microsoft Certified Partner to understand the best options to meet their business needs. If your current PC meets the system requirements for Windows 7 or Windows 8, you can buy Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8 Pro from a local retailer or Microsoft Certified Partner. If your PC does not meet system requirements, consider purchasing a new business PC with Windows 8 Pro."

Windows 8 Client for Hyper-V

Windows 8 Client for Hyper-V Download: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36188

Overview

"Client Hyper-V is the virtualization technology built into Windows 8. Client Hyper-V is the same virtualization technology previously available only in Windows Server. A similar functionality in Windows 7 is called Windows XP Mode.

Client Hyper-V enables you to run more than one 32-bit or 64-bit x86 operating system at the same time on the same host computer. But instead of working directly with the computer’s hardware, the operating systems run inside a virtual machine (VM).

Hyper-V enables developers and IT professionals to easily maintain multiple test environments and provides a simple mechanism to quickly switch between these environments."

How to Use vtUtilities to Manage Microsoft Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 , Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V Server 2012 .

Manage all versions of Hyper-V using Windows 7, Windows 8 and by running vtUtilities locally on GUI-less Hyper-V Server 2012
New build is available.

This release includes bug fixes and a new User Interface to manage advanced Hyper-V Virtual Switch features.
Support for Multiple Parent Virtual NICs
  • Virtual Network Manager GUI was enhanced to support multiple virtual switch ports bound to the management operating system virtual NICs. This functionality is available only for hosts running Hyper-V 3.0 and can be accessed via the Virtual Network Manager ‘Ports’ button on each Virtual Network Properties view.
  • Parent Virtual NICs can be created for any virtual network (switch) using the ‘Add’ button on its Port dialog box. This operation can effectively change the type of the virtual network, i.e. parent Virtual NIC added to the Private network will change it to Internal etc.
  • Virtual switch ports, corresponding to parent Virtual NICs ports, can be deleted using the Port’s dialog box ‘Delete’ button. This operation can also change the type of the underlying virtual network, i.e. Internal virtual network can become Private, or External virtual network can stop sharing its physical adapter with the management operating system.
  • When ‘Access host through VLAN’ is checked in Virtual Network Properties all parent Virtual NIC ports will use the same VLAN ID defined in the Virtual Network Properties view.
Support for Hyper-V Virtual Switch New Security Features
  • Port Access Control Lists (ACLs) can be defined for Virtual Switch ports bound to virtual machines and the management operating system virtual NICs. This functionality is available only for hosts running Hyper-V 3.0 and can be accessed via the Virtual Network Manager ‘Ports’ dialog for each Virtual Network Properties view (use ACL button to edit port’s Access Control List).
  • ACL entries specifying which packets are allowed or denied on the way into or out of the VM or the management operating system can be added, edited or deleted for each applicable port. Multiple ACL rules can be configured per virtual switch port. IPv4, IPv6 addresses or ranges as well as MAC addresses can be used to designate endpoint addresses on local or remote interfaces along with actions ‘Allow’, ‘Deny’ or ‘Meter’. Meter action can be used only with IP addresses.
Refer to TechNet Library for more information about the new Hyper-V Virtual Switch functionality.New build.
